COUNSELLING
WITH CHARLOTTE
Discover a welcoming approach to therapy and EMDR
If you’re reading this, you may be considering taking the courageous step to seek help and make positive changes to your life. Friends and family can often help us with life’s difficulties. But sometimes we need to talk to someone who is unconnected and neutral to help us gain perspective and understanding. Perhaps you need help with a major life crisis or a specific issue. Or it may be that you’re struggling with day-to-day life and would value someone to talk to and gain clarity. I offer both counselling / psychotherapy and EMDR therapy. Whichever type of therapy you are looking for, I believe that the relationship between counsellor and client is crucial in achieving a successful outcome. This is why I strive to build a safe and trusting environment in which you feel able to open up. Here’s a bit more information about how I work and the services I can offer to help you decide if I’m the right therapist for you.

Hi, my name
is Charlotte
This is my approach
to counselling, or
psychotherapy
Sometimes known as ‘talking therapy’, counselling offers you a safe space to open up, manage and process difficult feelings and explore the changes you wish to make in your life.
-
I will be curious about your early relationships and past and recent experiences as these can form part of how we relate, trust and view the world.

-
I am an integrative therapist, meaning I have knowledge and experience of different types of therapeutic techniques and will tailor my approach to you, depending on your preference and presenting issue.

-
Some clients enjoy working creatively with stones, sand trays or nesting dolls – while others prefer to simply talk. Both are powerful and effective. Either way, we will go at your pace and our work will be collaborative.

-
It is important to me that you are benefiting from our work together. I will regularly ‘check in’ to make sure you are finding our sessions helpful.

-
It is difficult to predict how many sessions a client will need; there are many variables – the issue you wish to explore, your availability and your budget.

-
Ideally, a minimum of six sessions will allow us to do meaningful work, however I may recommend more depending on the experiences you have had and how difficult day-to-day life is.

-
I am a fully trained counsellor and psychotherapist and accredited member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). I have worked with a range of issues including relationship difficulties, anxiety, work-based stress, life transitions, childhood trauma, the impact of bullying, bereavement, sexual identity, depression and a variety of traumatic experiences.

-
I have substantial experience of working with neurodivergent clients.

I was very apprehensive about having counselling sessions to start with but Charlotte was amazing and really put my mind at ease.
She has helped me through some very difficult times and I cannot thank her enough for the kindness and patience she gave me.

I believe that the relationship between counsellor and client is crucial in achieving successful therapy.
This is why I strive to build a safe and trusting environment in which you feel able to open up.

I will be curious about your early relationships and experiences but also understand that some people may wish to focus more on ‘here and now’ issues.
Others may wish to look at difficult past experiences.

Either way, we will go at your pace and our work will be collaborative.

EMDR therapy
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
-
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is a structured therapy that helps people heal from traumatic memories that continue to cause distress (e.g. flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts and behaviours that negatively impact daily life).

-
It uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to help your brain reprocess distressing memories and reduce emotional intensity.

-
EMDR is especially effective for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), single traumatic experiences such as car accidents, a sexual assault, witnessing a distressing incident or other distressing occurrence.

-
It is also effective for negative experiences that may have happened over a longer period of time such as an abusive adult relationship, childhood trauma, combat trauma or bullying (either as a child or adult).

-
Whether you're dealing with a single-incident trauma or complex trauma, EMDR can help alleviate the distress caused by painful experiences so they no longer dominate your thoughts, emotions and daily life.

-
I am a fully trained EDMR practitioner, trained by the EMDR Academy
Will I need short or longer-term therapy?
This will be discussed at your initial assessment. Usually, clients have six sessions at first, after which we will jointly decide how many more (if any) are needed.
Initial, free assessment
This is a 20-30 minute telephone chat to find out about you and what brings you to counselling. If we feel we can work together, we’ll find a mutually convenient day and time for weekly sessions.
Location & fees
Counselling is either in-person or online and sessions last 60 minutes. In-person therapy takes place at either the Priory Street Centre in York or in Wheldrake, YO19. Each session costs £50.

An EMDR session, lasting 90 minutes, is £80
